Milan Design Week 2016
We’ll let you in on a little secret. When we started our studio, we had one rule: Go to Milan every year for Design Week.
…so when April came, we had no choice but to hop on a plane and go. Being in Milan during this week is always an experience, and truly the place to be for designers and creatives. The annual Salone del Mobile is the world’s largest, most important design fair, and the entire city comes alive with it.
Our favourite part is the Fuorisalone in the city centre, where the exhibitions are a bit different from the fair located in the outskirts of the city. The showrooms are open, students from near and far exhibit their products and up-and-coming designers come to look for potential producers. Brands have interesting architect-artist collaborations, like the Forest of Light by Sou Fujimoto for COS, which was definetly one of the highlights. The most beautiful old spaces are filled with contemporary design. Nendo’s installation of 50 Manga Chairs for Friedman Benda set in an old cloister was mindblowing (our friends at TP/A _ Tim Power Architects were Producers and Architectural Partners on this exhibition). We probably spent three hours at HAY in and old gym - Il Pelota - and had coffee (or prosecco) in countless backyards. Because nobody does backyard chillouts like the Milanese.
And of course, the Norwegian designers stole the show at Ventura Lambrate with Norwegian Structure - an exhibition by Klubben, Norwegian Crafts and Jotun, in collaboration with The Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture. If you missed it, check it out here.
In attempt to see EVERYTHING, we walked, walked and walked. Including Fondazione Prada — Rem Koolhaas’ architectural paradise with a super interesting design and art collection, and Wes Anderson designed Bar Luce. Kind of obsessed. After four days trailing the streets of Milan, we are full of inspiration (and pasta). There is so much we can use for client projects - be it piazza culture or clever use of design to tell a story. We found interesting designers, cool events, grand installations and beautiful spaces (and people) on every corner. Only about 350 days till next time!
…we could go on forever, but enough about us for now. We know you're probably just scrolling through anyways.
With love and prosecco flavoured gelato,
Annike, Hilde + Ida Sofie
Words cannot describe how vibrant the city of Milan is this week in April. Fortunately for us [ now including you ], Hilde captures magic with a camera, so here’s our week in Milan in photos:
